Narwal Freo X Ultra
The Freo X Ultra, a highly rated and extremely functional Gen 4 robotic vacuum and mop is a well-built machine. The $1400 list price might be difficult to swallow, but it is often on sale to make it more affordable. The unit is stunning and the base takes up small space in a corner.
The design of this robot addresses some of the issues we've experienced with other robotic mops and vacuum units, such as brushes that get tangled up in hair and the brush not being able enough to reach the flooring beneath furniture. The sweeping capabilities are impressive on carpets and bare flooring. The vacuum/mop unit has an excellent level of debris pickup and the mop can soak up floors that are not soiled.
The mops also use an intelligent system to clean along the edges of furniture and around walls. The robot avoids most bulkier obstacles such as food bowls, toys, shoes, and backpacks without any issue. However, it could get stuck or become entangled with smaller and flatter objects like shoelaces, USB cables, and pens.
This robot was used to vacuum and mop hardwood floors FLOR carpet tiles as well as pile rugs in a huge open-plan house. It vacuumed and mops the 90m2 space in 170 minutes using FREO Mind enabled. This is a bit more than the average for Gen 4 robots.
Certain features differentiate this robot from other models in its class. Freo X Ultra is equipped with numerous enhancements in terms of sensors, software and hardware that keep it on top of its class. It has been declared to have an autonomy of 3.5 hours for environments of up to 260m2.
You can customize multiple functions with the Freo app, including the frequency at which the robot returns to the base station, its mopping frequency and power (silent or smart) and mopping humidity. The app can also detect areas that are heavily soiled and devise a streamlined cleaning route, and dispense detergent or raise the carpet's pads.
Other noteworthy features include a quick charging battery, a simple-to-read display on the robot's underside and a practical dock door that is easy to open. The Freo X Ultra vacuum and mop is perfect for homeowners and apartment dwellers who wish to cut down on chores and keep their homes clean.
Miele Scout RX3
Miele is no slouches in the robot vacuuming world and is known for its quality and technological innovation. This new robot is designed to elevate the cleaning capabilities to a new level, thanks to its innovative features.
The RX3 has dual suction technology, intelligent navigation with 3D mapping, and a camera that transmits a live image to your smartphone for effortless control. Its powerful four-stage cleaning system offers excellent dust pickup on carpet and hard flooring, while the intuitive side brushes that swing out and dual suction channels remove dust from corners. The 8.5 cm height allows it to fit under low furniture, while front cameras and infrared sensors help it navigate around obstacles and thresholds with ease.
The Scout RX3 impressed us in our tests on how well it was able to clean baking powder near corners and baseboards. Its 2,500Pa suction was weaker than other robots but it was still very silent and moved swiftly. It did not mop and its cleaning pad that was removable was difficult to attach. It also was unable to take on dirt that had dried up.
The app doesn't have advanced features, such as multiple cleaning modes or automated scheduling. It does support Alexa however its voice controls aren't clear or responsive. It's also a bit sporadic when it returns to the charging station following the course. Other robots can follow the wall or trace a previous route however the RX3 is a mess until it gives up.
Another issue we faced was with its smart features, specifically the mapping function and the digital keep-out zones. While it did a decent job of avoiding our shoes and furniture legs, it got easily caught by cables and socks, and it was not able to manage the tassels that adorn rug. That's the reason we didn't choose to include it on our Best Buy list. However, with a reasonable price and impressive performance The Scout RX3 is worth considering if you're looking for an alternative to the traditional uprights.
